Both Cotati and Rohnert Park, with their
smart design features and proximity to major
economic centers, are ideal for families
and commuters, who appreciate the central
location along the Highway 101 (Sonoma’s
main corridor).
Both Cotati and Rohnert Park were based
on trend-setting city design concepts. Cotati’s
unique hexagonal downtown hub, La Plaza,
was designed over 100 years ago, earning
it State Historical Landmark status. Designed
in the 1960’s, Rohnert Park was one
of the nation’s first planned communities.
Each section of the city is built around
a school and park, connected by walking
and bike paths, so that children can get
around without having to cross busy streets.
Rohnert Park is equidistant between Petaluma
and Santa Rosa, two of Sonoma’s largest
economic centers. The pastoral and agricultural
areas surrounding Cotati and Rohnert Park
provide a lovely backdrop of hills and vineyards.
Sonoma State University, one of the top
five in the state university system, calls
Rohnert Park home and offers residents film
and concert options in addition to lectures
and workshops open to the public. Established
in 1960 as a teacher education center, Sonoma
State University is a liberal arts and sciences
university offering 41 bachelor’s
degree programs and 14 master’s degree
programs. Recently, SSU expanded its athletic
program to include soccer.
Rohnert Park’s recreation options
include two golf facilities (Foxtail Golf
Course and Sonoma Mountain Golf Range) and
Spreckles Performing Arts Center. Some of
the residential sections within Rohnert
Park have their own community swimming pools.
The Callihan Sports & Fitness Center
is owned and operated by the City of Rohnert
Park and ranks among the finest public facilities
in the state. Cotati has a diverse mixture
of interesting café’s, restaurants
and gathering places around the hub, including
the re-opening of the famous Inn of the
Beginning that was a popular musical venue
in the 1960s.
Weather
Cotati and Rohnert Park share a sunny Mediterranean
climate, with summertime temperatures ranging
from the mid to upper 80’s, occasionally
reaching the 90s, but typically cooling
to the upper 40’s or 50’s in
the evenings. Wintertime temperatures in
Cotati and Rohnert Park average between
the mid 30’s to the mid 50’s.
Average rainfall is about 30 inches per
year, concentrated between the months of
December and March, extending sometimes
into November and April.

Housing
In addition to condominiums, apartments
and mobile home communities, Rohnert Park’s
abundance of single family homes in its
planned communities ensures plenty of choices
for mid-range buyers at any time of year.
Rohnert Park’s larger and more upscale
homes tend to be located along the golf
courses. Affordable housing options include
the Cotati Co-housing mixed-use project,
where 30 town homes co-exist with restaurants,
offices and retail shopping, Cotati also
offers a First Time Home Buyer Down Payment
Assistance Program. There are condominium
developments in town, but Cotati has rural
parcels with homes dotting its rolling hills.
Upper-end homes on parcels larger than 1/2
acre tend to be located in the outskirts
of Cotati where the acreage may be suitable
for equestrian, grazing, and vineyard applications.
